"That Venetian light"

There are cities in which light seems to have found its own singular way of conversing with space, and Venice undoubtedly belongs to that rare category. It slips into the crevices of the stone, glides across weathered walls, catches on a façade, a corner that was never meant to be highlighted. It is an almost secret illumination, revealing without insisting, as though the city itself were whispering gently to the passer-by: "Look more closely, there, at that detail you thought unremarkable." La Serenissima does not flaunt itself; it allows itself to be discovered.

Venice, in shadow and gloom

On certain days, Venice draws back slightly, as though the city had chosen to speak more softly, in a more muted register. Beneath an overcast sky, when the light calms and the colours seem to hold back their brightness, La Serenissima reveals another side of herself. Everything appears to settle into a slower rhythm, wrapped in a gentle melancholy. In this subdued atmosphere, surfaces, shapes and passageways take on an almost introspective quality: the city no longer asserts its charm; it lets it seep through.
