Peru and Bolivia are breathtakingly perched on South America's spine, the Andes, which run right through them. Established on the remnants of a former dazzling empire, they share the same Indian culture, survivor of a borrowed time of an age when the Inca reigned supreme over the region.
Too often despised and bullied by the non-native Hispanic elite, the proud descendants of the original occupiers fight every day to keep their identity intact. Despite a veneer of Catholicism forced on them by the invader they still practise their animistic faith and speak quechua or aymara.
