"Perched on top of a ridge, on the edge of the valley that seems, on a clear day, to separate it from the Himalayan summits, Goom’s Yiga Choling Gompa monastery is slumbering in the thick fog that shrouds it on this cold spring morning.


In the heart of Mauritanian Sahara, in a Dantesque scenery, the SNIM (Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière – National Industrial and Mining Corporation) extracts iron ore, a strategic income source for the country, the world’s 13th producer. The ore extracted from opencast mines is crushed, ground and enriched on the spot in factories permanently shrouded in a thick dust cloud, wrapped by the suffocating heat of the desert.
